April 29, 2021

Attention Fort McMurray Catholic School families,

As you may be aware, the Government of Alberta announced late this afternoon additional public health measures in the fight against COVID-19

These measures include the transition of grades 7-12 to virtual learning until at least May 17, 2021 in areas that meet specific thresholds for COVID-19 cases. We in Fort McMurray exceed this threshold. That threshold according to the additional public health measures is, “restrictions will be applied to any communities or regions with a case rate above 350 per 100,000 people and 250 active cases, and remain in place for at least two weeks.

As you are aware, we are already learning virtually in our Division. This will be an extension of at home learning for our grades 7-12 students only at this time.

EEP/K – Grade 6

Virtual learning will continue for our Early Entry Program (EEP) to grade 6 students next week. We are scheduled for a return to in school instruction on May 10, 2021.

Grade 7 to 12 students

Virtual learning will continue for grade 7-12 students for additional time. A return to in school instruction is now scheduled for May 17, 2021.

***Please note according to these updated additional public health measures “If, after two weeks, the case rate falls below the threshold of 350 cases per 100,000 people, these targeted measures will be removed and only current provincewide restrictions will apply.

  • As you are aware, every teacher has set up an online presence to support students while at home. If you need additional support logging into Google Classroom please connect with your teacher.
  • Our Specialized Services Programs (Independent Living Programs at Holy Trinity Catholic High School and Father Beauregard School, Vocational Education at Father Mercredi, and our Junior Transition Program at St Gabriel School) will continue in class.
  • There are no changes to programming to our Sacred Heart outreach program.

The health and safety of our staff, students and community is paramount. We know this news can be distressing for families and supports are available

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

George McGuigan, Fort McMurray Catholic Schools Superintendent
