Virtual Learning Extension

May 19, 2021

Good afternoon Fort McMurray Catholic School families,

As you are most likely aware, the Government of Alberta announced this afternoon a return to school on Tuesday May 25th for most areas of the province.

It is important to note that Fort McMurray, and the entire Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, is still considered an area of higher risk due to the current COVID-19 case count in our region. This means we will continue with virtual learning next week (May 25-28, 2021).

All schools in Fort McMurray are now scheduled to return to in class instruction for all grades on May 31, 2021.

Please note:

  • Friday May 21, 2021 is a non instructional day in our school calendar. This means there will be no class on Friday. We return to virtual instruction on Tuesday May 25, 2021.
  • Specialized Programs will continue in class as they have been operating during this time.  (This includes ILP and Vocational Education programs)
  • No changes for our Virtual Learning Academy and Sacred Heart Outreach program
  • Out of School Care will continue to provide full day programming from Monday to Friday for children already registered in the program

Please be assured we will continue to work closely with Alberta Health Services to ensure we follow their ongoing recommendations.

We continue to remind families to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 using the Alberta Health Screening Questionnaire. Please remember to complete the checklist each day. If you or a member of your family has any of the symptoms of illness listed, please fill out the online Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or call Health Link at 811.

School divisions do not have the authority to make public health decisions like moving a full school division to virtual learning. When steps are taken it is at the direction of the Alberta Education, Alberta Health Services and local health authorities. Fort McMurray Catholic Schools is in regular communication with Alberta Education, Alberta Health Services, and school divisions across the province.

God Bless,

George McGuigan

Fort McMurray Catholic Schools Superintendent
