We would like to inform you about a change in our 2021/22 school calendar. The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation is September 30, 2021. This will be reflected in our updated school calendar as a day off in respect for this new federal holiday.
This federal statutory holiday was first announced in the summer. We have been reviewing this day and discussing this with our stakeholders. The provincial government recently indicated the decision on whether this holiday would be respected or not rests in the hands of the employer.
The federal statutory holiday is in response to the Truth and Reconciliation call to action number 80, which calls on the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish the holiday to commemorate the history and legacy of residential schools and honour the survivors, their families, and communities.
We all have a part to play in reconciliation. We will continue to discuss the Calls to Action in our schools and continue our journey to true reconciliation.
