FMPSD and FMCSD Postpone High School Graduation Ceremonies

(FORT MCMURRAY, AB – May 7, 2020) In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic – Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMSPD) and Fort McMurray Catholic Schools have decided to postpone their high school graduation ceremonies until further notice.

Holy Trinity Catholic High School had planned to celebrate their 204 graduating students in a ceremony later this month. The 230 graduates of Father Mercredi High School were set to cross the stage in mid June.

“We are saddened to have to postpone this important and special milestone in our childrens’ lives. COVID-19 has impacted us all and we must follow the directives of our Chief Medical Officer. An alternative date will be scheduled once it is deemed safe to do so. Please know, we are extremely proud of your accomplishments and thank you and your parents for the honour to be a part of your lives. Fort McMurray Catholic Schools loves all of you,” said Fort McMurray Catholic Schools Superintendent George McGuigan.

An estimated 308 FMPSD graduates were set to cross the aisle this June with Fort McMurray Composite High School’s graduation slated for later this month, and École McTavish High School’s first class graduating this year.

“Graduation is one of the most important days in a student and their family’s life, we haven’t made this heartbreaking decision lightly. Until we can safely have our students, parents and staff celebrate together, it is best to postpone. Congratulations to all our graduates, and we know the next chapter of your life will be a remarkable one,” noted Jennifer Turner, Superintendent, FMPSD.

Congratulations and best of luck to all FMPSD and FMCSD graduates.
